Quite eloquent post. I am much older than the cohort in question, but I sometimes find myself engaged in the same fuzzy thinking. I am lucky enough to live in a place with a decent independent (which is also within close walking distance of my house), so I do have a choice of coffee shops, but I can't believe that the Green Monster is the locus of all evil.
As for Ikea, Target is evolving to provide, in some cases, the same level of panache in cheap Asian slaveshop consumer products (although still much less furniture selection) -and you don't have to brave the absolutely insane crowds, huge parking lots, and bother of an IKEA store
